On the ocher route, discocer Roussillon village with Maison Brémond 1830

Roussillon, the singular

Identifiable by its warm and vibrant colors but also by the olive trees, the cherry trees and the lavender hemming it.

As incredible as it may be, some 230 million years ago, Provence was covered by the sea. The centuries pass and the soil evolves to discover colored rocks, the result of successive geological movements.

The ochres appear to be becoming a veritable currency of exchange: they have really become an industrial product thanks to the Roussillonnais Jean-Étienne Astier who, at the end of the 18th century, had the idea of washing the ochreous sands to separate the natural pigment from the sand. .

If Maison Brémond 1830 has chosen to acquire this mill, it is both to pay tribute to these men and women working to perpetuate the tradition but also to highlight the know-how of Provençal olive growers and millers.

The historic Roussillon oil mill

Immerse yourself in the heart of Roussillon’s olive-growing history by visiting the Roussillon oil mill. Here grindstone, press and amphorae tell the story of the artisanal process aimed at extracting oil from the olive.

Provence is renowned for its olive oil production. Indeed, it was customary, a few years ago, for each village to produce its own olive oil. Winter sounded the time of crushing and pressing, when families brought their harvest.

Active until the great frost of winter 1956, the historic Roussillon mill was then abandoned before being restored by Maison Brémond 1830. It is now accessible to the public free of charge.
